On the Watertown Seal is a picture of an English Colonist and an Indian exchanging, as peace tokens,  bread for fish.  Captain Roger Clap landed at Nantasket Point in 1630 and rode up Charles River to Gerry's Landing with the first party of Watertown Colonists.

Watertown Square Proposed ImprovementsBackground

  • The Watertown Square Study Commission was created as a result of Town Council Resolution #R98-037
  • The Commission was formed in response to requests from local businesses and residents via survey
  • The Commission has been meeting monthly since November 1998
  • The Cecil Group and Bayside Engineering were selected to develop a master plan for future improvements

Mission
Examine the existing conditions in Watertown Square and formulate strategies and recommendations on ways to improve the physical and economic condition, while maintaining its place as the center of the Town.

Goals & Objectives

  • Increase access to the Square
  • Encourage new mix of business
  • Improve the streetscape
  • Encourage historic preservation
  • Add trees and green areas
  • Encourage improvements to storefronts
  • Increase community involvement
  • Make the Square a destination
