On the Watertown Seal is a picture of an English Colonist and an Indian exchanging, as peace tokens,  bread for fish.  Captain Roger Clap landed at Nantasket Point in 1630 and rode up Charles River to Gerry's Landing with the first party of Watertown Colonists.

Pedestrian SafetyScope of Work
  • Enhance the pedestrian elements in the Square – promote safety
  • Improve crosswalk delineation
  • Create uniform design by doing the following:
    • New sidewalks with accent paver's
    • Install street trees and planters
    • Add more appropriate lighting

      • Realignments to crosswalks and islands will result in shorter crossings and added pedestrian refuge
      • Countdown signals will provide a better awareness of crossing time
      • Reducing certain turning movements will reduce pedestrian / vehicle conflicts

      Uniform DesignAccessibility
      • The proposed enhancements will unify elements within the Square
      • Missing or deteriorated components would be restored
      • New components and amenities will create a sense of identity for the square

      Lighting

      • Existing lighting is designed to promote vehicular movement
      • Proposed lighting is intended to enhance the pedestrian experience as well
      • The proposed lighting relates better with physical elements in the Square

      Accessibility
      • The plan will improve transition points at crosswalks
      • The project will correct problems with grades and elevations that contribute to improved accessibility
      • Discussions will lead to greater awareness of accessibility issues

      Beyond Phase 1
      This is an initial phase of enhancements suggested for its maximum effect for a modest expenditure.
